Valve boss blows a gasket over PS3
16:45, Jan 15th by Tim Ingham
The MD of US development studio Valve Corporation has labelled Sony’s PlayStation 3 “a total disaster” and predicted that Nintendo’s Wii will win the next-gen console battle.
Speaking to Game Informer magazine, Gabe Newell suggested that Sony should scrap plans to release PS3 and develop an entirely new system.
“The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted,” said Newell. “I’d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a ‘do over’. Just say, ‘This was a horrible disaster and we’re sorry and we’re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.’”
Newell reserved special praise for the Wii, which he said would outsell Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by next Christmas.
“The happy story is the Wii,” he added. “I’m betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I’m crazy. I really like everything that Nintendo is doing."
Newell is a co-founder of Valve, which made its name by developing the multi-award wining Half Life and Source engine. More recently, it’s become equally known for its Steam digital download service, which has attracted publishers including EA, Activision and Take 2 to sign up.
In December, the firm signed an in-game advertising deal for Counter Strike with IGA, which was billed by the two companies as one of the biggest of its kind.

There's no way you can think the Dreamcast was a disaster. It's been the only consolse since the SNES that's had 80% of their games be amazing. The Dreamcast is one of the better systems to date, and I own most of them.
The PS3 is a total disaster. This is how the next-gen war is:
XBOX 360
Then there's the family system, Wii.
Then there's the $700 crap pile, PS3.
The 360 is the only next gen console, the Wii is on another level. There's no way you can compare the Wii and 360 really, since they're designed for two completely different things.

I may claim I hate the Wii, but that's because I'm the type of person that plays games when I'm not with friends, and the Wii is designed to have 4 people playing at once.

I would like to give my advice on "next-gen" systems but I have none of them :< Waiting for more games on the 360 to buy it, GoW and Viva Pinata isn't enough... And I'm getting really frustrated with the Wii, I saw one in a shop 10 mins from my house, but I didn't have money on me, so I go back home to get it, and when I get back it's already sold >.>

The one exclusive title I wanted for the GC came to the PS2 with more content....RE4 was what I hoped would save the GC, and maybe get some more games for it....but no...
Smash Brothers, all the mario sports, mario party, RE4, Skies of Arcadia:Legends, just a few of the good games for the gamecube.

timing. they released it too close to the ps2 launch, and people who were hyped up over the ps2 just decided to wait. the dreamcast could do things way ahead of its time. internet access right out of the box, a stream of online games and internet browsing (something we cant even get on most of the modern day consoles). the ability to mod the holy shit out of it. one of the best parts of dreamcast was making rom discs for nes/snes/ps1/gamecube/gameboy/genesis SO ON AND SO ON basically for any console with a lower processing power, the dc could run the emulator for it. you could fit like a thousand nes games on one disc. but, there was still a shit ton of dc classics like power stone, phantasy star online, and mother fucking soul calibur. graphically speaking, it wasnt far off from a ps2, and most of the games on a dreamcast actually looked better than what you could find on a ps2 at the time. but as i said earlier, timing and third party support just wasnt right. where as ps3 has more support than any other console should have after the ps2 success, and its still a failure.

Some DC games look better than PS2 games being released now. Dreamcast didn't fail, it's just faggots that think it did.
I bought one when it came out, and I've enjoyed more games on that than NES, SNES, N64, GC and right now even XBOX 360.
I own every single RPG released in the US on the DC, and there has not been a single system that has had better RPGs. Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia are far superior to any other RPG, and it was released on the DC. Then Grandia II got a PC + PS2 release, and Skies of Arcadia came out on the GC.

Power Stone? When you collect three you morph into a stronger form of your character for a short amount of time, with two basic attack moves and two ultimates. You also get to pick up various weapons/objects to use or throw.

Theres a reason for that, and thats because of Microsofts API. It has nothing to do with the 360 being superior to a PC or anything like that. With XNA, MS made it very easy to port between the two, and allow developers to make more money. PC will always be better than a console because it is an open platform. People can be more innovative with a PC because it is expandable, whereas a console is not, much like a Mac.

It's because they'll actually get money from the 360 version, where the market is flourishing, while the PC market is completely dead and they just release it for the few % that actually still play it.

lol, pc market is not dead, and never will be. There are quite a few exclusive PC games coming out, quite a few of which Victis posted up here. The Burning Crusade sold 2.4 million copies in 24 hours, that is nowhere near dead. Halo 2 is the only console game that has outdone that.
As for why isn't Halo 2 on PC yet? Because Microsoft is sitting on it, waiting for Vista to go commercial, allowing it to get an installed base, because they're forcing gamers to upgrade to play it. It has nothing to do with the PC being a bad platform, it has everything to do with Microsoft being a greedy corporation.
Tiiiiired of console fanboi's claiming pc gaming is dead. Everytime new consoles come out, you get people saying "pc gaming is dying!" Everytime, pc gaming gets through it all.

TBC doesn't count, because it's a fucking MMO RPG. Just look at the "upcoming games in 2007" thread. There's maybe 2 out of 30 games that are exclusive to the PC, and both of them are MMOs.
I'm tired of you PC fanbois thinking that there's actually a gaming market left on the PC if you're not interested in fucking MMOs. TBC is just showing how addicted people are to World of Warcraft....there's never been a shooter on the PC that has sold as much as Halo/Halo 2 has done.
You're a game designer yourself. Just think about it, would you like to work for free? No. It's so easy to pirate games now adays for the PC without doing anything, so why not just start releasing all your good games on a console, where people have to give some sort of cash (if they haven't hacked their systems that is).
Face it, if you don't want to be stuck playing MMO rpgs you have to own a console.
EDIT: BTW, I was just like the way you think right now "the PC is far superior to consoles when it comes to gaming". Then I actually started playing Halo 2, and realized I am far superior with a controller than I am with a mouse + keyboard. Then I also realized how many good games are coming out for the consoles, and also the total amount of games for them compared to what the PC is getting. Honestly, it isn't until now that the PC has been hit in the balls, then all limbs cut off, when it comes to games. But this time around, there will be a hard recovery, if none at all, seeing as how all the games are being ported to the 360 and not the other way around.

I played Resistance: Fall of Man....it is not worth $800 (system + game). Honestly, the Wii is uber cheap, and so are the games. Although I don't love the system, I find it handy when my friends want to play a GC game and we can pop that in, or when I get drunk and decide to play Trauma Center on the Wii.
Gears of War, on the other hand, is worth the $460 you'll spend on the system + the game.

In term of Fps the pc doesn't have much exclusive atm, but fps isn't the only kind of game that are worth playing... Supreme Commander look awesome, C&C 3 can be a really good game. In term of Rpgs, NVM 2 wasn't bad all, Gothic 3 is not bad either. So saying the PC game market is unexistant beside mmos isn't that true.
And btw just read 10 millions of DS were sold in Europe since its launch, that's amazing >.>

TY, someone else who doesn't have their eyes closed. Theres more to gaming than FPS.
Also, piracy is an issue with ANY medium. I bought ONE xbox game out of the god knows how many I have. Meanwhile, on the SAME shelf I have numerous, PAID for pc games. I paid for those pc games because they were WORTH my money, and I ended up doing the same for my xbox, buying Halo, and my brother paying for Halo 2.
Yay, xbox 360 has gears of war, and lost planet, not worth the money to me. I'd rather own something that does just about anything I want, AND can play video games. I don't have to pay to play FPS online on a pc, but I do on a xbox.
And yes, I am a game designer, which is why I realize pc gaming isn't going anywhere, while at the same time realize neither is console gaming. Consoles however, are better suited for certain games. Having played FPS on both, I still feel I'm a hell of a lot more accurate on my pc than I am with a friggin joystick.
Fanboy or fanboi is a term used to describe an individual (usually male, though the feminine version fangirl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fangirl) may be used for females) who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsession). Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. They are also typically hateful to the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.I am in no way a pc "fanboi" as I don't blindly defend my position while disregarding the valid points of the other side, or claiming the one that I don't like as much is dying.
Hellgate: London, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 are all FPS that are PC-only titles. Hellgate being made by one of the guys who created Diablo is a must have for any gamer.

I might argue that it is more popular than any one console, sure, but not all across the board. It'd actually be interesting to see installed base world-wide of pc-gamers, and compare it to consoles. PC's, as far as cost, is all relative. It all depends on what YOU are willing to pay for, because you're given a choice of what is inside YOUR pc. Consoles are the same, one xbox 360 is the same as the other, with no choice as far as the consumer is concerned. As far as user-friendly, both are kind of put the disc in and play, only difference being pc's require you to install the game, and consoles don't.

Let's keep in mind a certain consumer. A person who wants to have the best of everything, and they've got the money to pay for it. They went out and bought their Xbox 360 and PS3, to put on their 52-inch Sharp Aquous LCD HDTV, and he's even got a Wii. But he wants a computer now. He goes on to some high-end PC web site, say, Alienware, because he heard they were good computers, and builds one by selecting the most expensive options he can find, and some time later, he's playing STALKER and hellgate on his new rig.
Now, this consumer, he's not too bright. He makes a decent living, but only by doing the one skill he's good at. He's heard about how he overpaid for his machine, and that people have better systems for a lot cheaper because they built it. What is this person going to think in five or six years down the line, with a Xbox 360, a PS3, and a Wii, along with the five year old "gaming" PC? You can make the valid points that he's not too bright, and he's not "willing to invest" a lot of time into a PC.
With that said, what's more affordable and user-friendly: PCs or consoles?

I'm going to have to disagree with you grindy.
PC is no where near as plug and play as a console.
All i had to do with my 360 when i first got it was plug it in, choose my language,
and put in DOA4.
PC... if you aren't an idiot, you are definitely going to want to build your own PC, and that in itself is a task to sink a few good hours into if you are really quick.
Boot up installation software for OS, blah blah.
Wait an hour, wank.
Install video card drivers, install sound drivers, install driver drivers... etc.
Get game, put it in.. install...
You can see how that works obviously... so yeah... consoles > PC in terms of user friendlyness.

5 years down the road there will be a new console, and they'll be forking over more money by then, so the point of affordable is moot. Also, there are plenty of mom & pop pc shops that CAN make those less expensive, high end pc's just fine. If mr. not-too-bright can read about the latest and greatest console, I'm sure he can open up a phone book and find a local pc store that is more than willing to make a pc for what he wants, therefore eliminating the time it takes to make it himself.
How many people that play L2 have made their own pc? I guarantee you less than half have, and less than half have the KNOWLEDGE to, atleast properly. PC gaming doesn't require you to have that knowledge, nor does it require you to fork over an arm and a leg for your rig if you're atleast a little willing to do SOME reading.
If mr. not-so-bright had the money the first time to pay for an alienware pc, why doesn't he just do it again? Whats stopping him from doing so? Whats stopping him from just replacing the parts that are showing age, like a video card?

Five years down the line we will not see the next generation consoles. Last generation lasted six years, and it's already been stated by different sources that this generation will last longer than the previous two, both of which lasted six years.
I'm going to be honest with you, and I'm guessing this is a rare case, but I've looked into it, and there's no place around me that I've found to build PCs. I've been told to "make friends with people who know how to build them," and to trust them with my money and parts.

My point is that if you want "the best," it's going to take either a lot of time or a lot of money, for something that will be outclassed within a year. Whereas if you buy a console, you're on top until the next generation. And you can't sell me that the graphics on the 360 and PS3 aren't as good, I just won't buy that.
If mr. not-so-bright had the money the first time to pay for an alienware pc, why doesn't he just do it again? Whats stopping him from doing so? Whats stopping him from just replacing the parts that are showing age, like a video card?
I'll give you that replacing the video card would not be a problem, but what about when Intel announces their new fangled chipset, and he needs a whole new CPU to still be on top? Is that just as easy? The answer to that question would be inexperience, and the answer to the first question would be frustration. Because at the end of the day, in order to stay on top in the PC world, he's buying something every six months to a year. But to stay on top in the console market, what does he have to do?
Now, I understand your point that replacing certain pieces of hardware is a lot easier than I think it is, and that there are places that offer the service that he's looking for. But do you understand my point that there are people who just want to buy a console, plug it in, and be satisfied for six years or more?

Five years down the line we will not see the next generation consoles. Last generation lasted six years, and it's already been stated by different sources that this generation will last longer than the previous two, both of which lasted six years.
Time between xbox and 360 is almost four years to the day, and sources say the next one is already in development...
I'm going to be honest with you, and I'm guessing this is a rare case, but I've looked into it, and there's no place around me that I've found to build PCs. I've been told to "make friends with people who know how to build them," and to trust them with my money and parts.
Thats a very rare case...

To play it to the best possible, you're damn right it does, thanks to poor coding on NCSofts part, but thats another story...

That is something that consoles have over pc's, sure, but at the same time, pc games are usually a lot better looking at the end of a consoles life.

I sure do, that was my point in saying I understand both sides of the tracks, and that saying one or the other is dead is fucking retarded because both are here to stay...

It can't be that hard to find someone to build you a PC.
In my hometown of 6,000 people we have a computer shop, we even had two before the other guy closed down.

People don't understand when I say the PC gaming industry is dead, I'm talking about exclusive PC games that aren't MMORPGs.
There are a hell of a lot more exclusive games on the 360, PS3 and Wii (each system beats the PC by a fucking shitload when looking at the exclusives).
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a fast PC. Why not just get a console, and make sure that the skill you have isn't because you have a faster system, or that a certain person didn't rape you because his computer can handle all the graphics better than you can? I love the fact that when I jump into a Gears of War, or Halo 2 game, where the host isn't in Siberia, it's all about skill and not dependent on the system.
I still think the PC is superior in all other places, just not gaming.
I'd rather code my game on a PC than on a 360 for example. And if I was the CEO of a game company I'd release it on both PC and 360 hand-in-hand for the entirity of the systems life, because that's how you make the cash money.

Id say, for ease of use, user friendly factor.. it beats out the PC completely.. but thats because all it does is play games/music/movies..
A beefed up PC doesn't have to cost thousands, hell, it doesn't even have to hit quad digits.. people see this technology and instantly think its the next wave.. look at the SLI craze.. If I have multiple CPU's I need multiple GPUs!... :/
When it finally comes down to it.. my current PC will destroy the 360's graphic ability..the PS3, and the Wii.. but consoles just can't be compared to the world of a PC.. not to marginalize the impact and strengths that consoles have.. its plug and play, no worries of spyware, drivers, upkeep.. none of that, none of the hassle.. (tbh I think the Wii is currently in a class of its own)..
But the world of a PC will step on any console today.. the amount of shit you can do on a PC is endless.. I can work from home, connect to my PC's here at home from anywhere in the world, shop, buy, and sell anything, look up anything, learn almost anything I need, I also never have to pay for my games, or my software, movies come in HD, and so do my TV shows (commercial free as well).. I can make videos, music, photography, edit this, render that.. connect to anyone else on the planet, either on a forum, a chatroom (not so much), msn, voip, find anything on the planet, search the planet, either via my web browser, or virtual map like google earth.. I mean its just endless.. a PC can be fully customized, its not a cookie cutter box that you plug in.. which also means the problems that come with it.. drivers, virus', spyware, compatibility issues, hardware failures, overheating issues, PCs eventually need some sort of attention, if they don't get proper upkeep, they bog down, begin to crash.. the variables that set it apart (above and beyond imo) also cause it to be a more problematic solution, especially people who are either too naive, too dumb, or too ignorant to research it themselves.
As for the console destroying PCs in the gaming market, it all depends.. I like to branch off the games I play, I also pay nothing for them.. I don't have to pay xbox live fees to connect to other people.. I can also share games Ive got with other buddies, who also pay nothing..
The console is definitely a good investment if you want to just play the game without any hassle, but it all comes down to preference, I will always say the PC is superior to the console.. but if I wasn't into all the shit I do.. I'd just grab a console, its so much easier to use, no hassle, just throw the switch and play.

Thats all it comes down to right there. Pc games will always be around and some games will always play better on a pc. Although i love me wii and i love the way i can play games with it, i will always prefer a mouse and keyboard to other things.

The market for 360,ps3, and wii isn't nearly as saturated as the pc market, there are more than 30 million able PCs for the majority of games. The xbox360 hasnt even made it to 10million yet. (NetGenWars.com is a big farse, they information isn't at all accurate.)
What grindrolas was trying to get at is that during the other console generations, (n64, dreamcast, ps2, etc) there were a hell of alot of exclusives, however after a certain period of time this will change like it did before.
Also, this christmas the biggest selling console was the ps2 slim, I find that funny... Alot of people consider this generation way too early to spend 500 dollars on a system that can only play 3-4 games that they might enjoy. Not to mention, not everyone has a HDTV, we all can't have 1080i picture, and in my opinion anything less looks like crap (my poor SDTV :() Im not gonna spend a grand on a new tv just for a console, that just doesn't make sense...
I love the fact that when I jump into a Gears of War, or Halo 2 game, where the host isn't in Siberia, it's all about skill and not dependent on the system.
Not true at all, paticularly if you have a poor cable internet provider... response times from servers fuck up everyone, its just the way it is... Unless everyone is running at 30-40 ms from the server, theres gonna be screw ups.. The majority of systems will play a game the way its meant to be played so long as they dont turn up the graphics to something their computer can't handle. (1 Point for the 360 in being more user friendly in this area.) I have a 9800 pro, ancient in the standards of gaming.... and I can play oblivion on the damn thing.
And I will always play better with a keyboard and mouse.. I do say kudos for nintendo for trying something different, even if I do see it as a gimmick.
One thing the 360 has that I like is microsoft's game studios, I fail to see why sony doesn't have the same thing... they had something similar when the playstation was around...
It just sounds very naive to call the entire pc gaming market dead, it's just tired.. and IMO, you cant play an FPS as well on a controller... or an RTS for that matter.

also dama, there is a little kit that you can buy to make your own faceplate.
It basically this cyllinder that you buy, print out your design on a piece of paper, ship to wherever the company is
And then you get a faceplate with your design on it 2 weeks later.
Saw it at BestBuy for $20 USD so yeah. :)
