in this month's EGM, they ran a really nice article on all of the exciting-looking titles coming up this year, and info on them. and there are a lot of 'em, 2007 looks really exciting. since i'm tired of "oh yeah, name one good game coming out for [console], i bet you can't 'cause i hate all games," thought i'd post some of them. they're grouped by season, with a few sidebars here and there.
Winter 2007: January and February
Virtua Fighter 5 - PS3/XB360
Sega's popular fighter returns to consoles, fourteen years since the original revolutionized the genre with it's 3D fighting. This is the first Virtua Fighter to look more promising than it's arcade-only counterpart.
Mass Effect - XB360
From BioWare, the creators of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, comes Mass Effect, a souped-up next gen version of KOTOR's gameplay. The creator's were quoted talking about just what kind of consequences your character will face from any action he takes during the game, and not only will this directly effect your character, but it will also effect the outcome of the game, and also all planned sequels. Epic.
Sonic and the Secret Rings - Wii
If you've been keeping up with Sonic's latest games, they've, um, blown. Sonic the Hedgehog, the recent Xbox 360/PS3 game, was torn up in reviews, and many players were disappointed to watch Sega's mascot go from his original speedy self, to relying on driving vehicles and harnessing underdeveloped elements. But the Sonic Team seems to be going back to it's roots for this new installment, focusing on Sonic's speed, which will be controlled by using the Wii remote horizontally, more than anything else.
Crackdown - Xbox 360
From David Jones, one of the fathers of the original Grand Theft Auto, comes Crackdown, a new free-roaming sandbox game, pitting you as the cop in a futuristic city filled with crime. The game will feature a very lenient Gears of War-style co-op mode, that will allow a friend to jump in and out of the game as you please.
Medal of Honor: Airborne - PS3/XB360
World War II's coming back again in this latest installment of Medal of Honor. This new addition to the series will feature more interactivity with aerial combat, namely in the addition of parachute drops. A full-featured next-gen jump out of a plane, landing you smack in the middle of an intense firefight.
Forza Motorsport 2 - Xbox 360
We may not see a new Gran Turismo any time soon, but Microsoft is coming in strong with the next Forza Motorsport. The developers are boasting an extremely realistic racing simulator, featuring amazingly detailed vehicles, tracks, and of course, a plug for the Xbox 360 racing wheel. The game will also include a very extensive online component, which will allow players to organize a race series with friends, trade custom built cars, and interactivity with the Forza web site.
Burnout 5 - PS3/XB360
If you're not into the simulators, then the next installment of Burnout might be the racing game for you. Instead of last year's prettied-up version that landed on the 360, this game is being developed from the ground up for next-gen platforms. The game will be a more open-ended affair, like Test Drive Unlimited. Expect huge car pileups and insane damage inflicted to vehicles - neck-breaking crashes and cars split into two.
Def Jam: Icon - PS3/XB360
The gritty wrestler will be looking to make a strong addition to next-gen consoles as well, boasting more interactivity with the music that you hear in the game. Level-specific hazards will actually be triggered by the kind of music that you hear during the fight. Different traps will actually trigger depending on the tempo of the song. The kicker to this is the ability to add your own songs to the game.
Lair - Playstation 3
If you're not sold on the whole Sixaxis revolution yet, then this might be the game to do it for you. Lair, a dragon-oriented combat game, is boasting very intuitive controls utilizing the motion-sensing capabilities of Sony's new controller. Flying a dragon by tilting and swerving with the controller is reportedly very easy, and allows for much more percision. Also look foward to sick-looking dragon attacks and special abilities.
MotorStorm - Playstation 3
MotorStorm's finished product promises to deliver a lot more than the demo that was available on day one of the PS3 launch. Many additions and improvements were made to the game, including amazingly realistic visuals, and really tough opponent A.I. - don't be surprised when two other racers box you in and force your vehicle to fly right off a cliff. Also included will be Road Rash style eight player online races.
Also coming out Winter 2007:
NBA Street Homecourt - PS3/XB360
Virtua Tennis 3 - PS3/XB360
SSX Blur - Wii
Cooking Mama: Cook Off - Wii
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Playstation 3
Guitar Hero II - Xbox 360
and that's just winter. more later.

i heard that MGS4 rumor, too, but there was an article recently that quoted Hideo Kojima saying that the current 25GB blu-ray disc wasn't enough for MGS4, and that he was waiting for the dual-layered 50GB one. and that's crazy.
but yeah, i agree, if MGS4 hits Xbox 360, that'll just delay me getting a PS3 even more.

Blue Dragon - Xbox 360
I'm sure everyone's heard from some source or another that "nobody in Japan likes the 360, so they sit on the shelves and collect dust!" While exaggerated, that's not too far from the truth, due to a lack of traditional Japanese support for the system. Blue Dragon is one exception to that, by combining traditional Japanese RPG elements, next-gen visuals, and unique gameplay. Why would anyone, let alone the Japanese market, be so excited? Three names. Hironobu Sakaguchi (father of Final Fantasy), Nobuo Uematsu (long time music composer for Final Fantasy), and Akira Toriyama (author of Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z, character designer for Dragon Quest VIII/Chrono Trigger).
Pokemon Battle Revolution - Wii
Whether you're a Pokemon fan or not, Pokemon Battle Revolution is recieving a lot of attention right now. Sure, Pokemon may be dead to us now, but it still is a fan among younger generations, noted by the last DS title, Pokemon Ranger, breaking into the top 10 in sales. But many more people are going to take a good look at this one, because it's going to be the first Wii title to have online play. How well it works out will be under major scrutiny not only for the game, but for the Wii itself. It's got a lot going for it - Pokemon battles online against other players? Sounds like a good starting point.
Shadowrun - Xbox 360
Another game that will be under the spotlight for showcasing a brand new service - this time it's Microsoft's new Live Anywhere. This mystical shooter will be available on the PC as well, and the online play will pit Xbox Live players against those on the PC. This might scare off a lot of Xbox players who don't want to challenge those with a keyboard and mouse, but the developers are trying very hard to balance the two out. Reportedly in their initial build, the Xbox version had a distinct advantage over the PC players.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Wii
The Wii seems like it was built for a good first-person shooter, and players may not have been satisfied after playing Red Steel, Call of Duty 3, and Far Cry: Vengeance. Metroid's success on the GameCube offers a glimmer of hope for the Wii, and there's no doubt that the third installment could garnish a lot of praise. Samus will obtain new abilities for her outing on the Wii, such as unlocking doors by twisting the remote, and knocking away enemy shields with the nunchuk. Also notable that this will be the first time we're going to hear Samus, as she will be speaking throughout the game.
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames - Playstation 3
The original Mercenaries aimed to bring players a living, breathing world, and allow them to, well, destroy it. The developers felt that while they did some justice to their goal, the PS3 will allow them to accomplish this feat a lot better. The PS3's power makes blowing up any building in the game very possible, and it'll have never looked so good as before. Co-op play will also be a key feature for this game, allowing the player and a friend to cause two times the destruction.
Command & Conquer: Tiberium Wars - Xbox 360
Real-time strategy games have had a hard time living up to PC counterparts, but the latest edition of C&C looks to change that. By following the same one-button control scheme that made Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth a more playable console RTS, Tiberium Wars looks to bring the successful franchise to console players everywhere.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma - Playstation 3
While it is essentially a remake of Ninja Gaiden Black, which was a remake of the Xbox version of Ninja Gaiden, PS3 owners have a lot to look forward to from Ryu Hayabusa. The graphics engine in the game is being completely redone for the powerful PS3 innards, making the game look much more amazing than it ever was before. More importantly, however, is the addition of portions of the game where the player controls Rachel, who was previously eye-candy only, complete with her own upgradable weapons and different costumes to unlock. Beyond that, Ryu will also be battling new foes, and implementing the water-running and aquatic battles that were formerly hinted at.
Also coming out in Spring 2007:
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 - PS3/XB360
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - PS3/XB360
The Darkness - PS3/XB360
John Woo Presents Stranglehold - PS3/XB360
Battalion Wars 2 - Wii
Brothers in Arms: D-Day - Wii
Eternal Sonata - Xbox 360

oh man, how could I forget? i'm not doing DS/PSP games, but it's very interesting to note that in April, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl will be released for the DS, and the Wii's Pokemon Battle Revolution will allow the two games to interact, namely, importing your Diamond/Pearl Pokemon to Battle Revolution.
That's really hardcore. Any hardcore fan who knows exactly how to create a competitve team could sink so much time on the DS, just to put their final team onto the Wii and battle others online. Though, with the action replay out for the DS, not to mention the imminent stampede of small children playing online, they may just stick to internet-based battle emulators.

while i don't consider myself a "hardcore pokemon fan," the pokemon metagame really amazes me. people have taken it to a level of depth i never though was possible back when i played these games. but you gotta be some kind of person to play pokemon day in and day out since back when it was released, and figure all that crap out.

Crysis
German developer Crytek delivered Far Cry - which was its first game - an incredible achievement and a first-person shooter that some regard as better that Half-Life 2. It's no surprise then that anticipation for its second shooter, Crysis, is hitting fever pitch, and it has to be said that to date it appears that the game is going to live up to hopes. The science fiction storyline is a real aliens-hit-Earth classic and we're crossing fingers that the free-roaming gameplay, stunning environments, nuts physics and thrilling action will be blended together to create one scrumptious FPS dish. Don't let us down, Crytek.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
It's been nearly 10 years, incredibly, but now Command & Conquer is returning and with it GDI vs. Nod destruction. The game boasts an impressive cast of actors - including the legend that is Michael Ironside! - and, while sticking to the series' tried and tested formula in many ways, does introduce a number of cool new single-player features - like multiple campaign branches. We've been promised a strong the storyline too and, of course, with the acting talent that's been signed up, the game's live action movie sequences will, all being well, ladle on the atmosphere.

Spore
It's the latest title from The Sims creator and all-round videogame design genius Will Wright, and naturally that makes it one of the PC stars of 2007. It's an ambitious game, Wright explaining that "It's a game about life. It's about life starting at the cellular level, working it's way up through evolution, into tribal societies, civilisation, and eventually going out into space and spreading through the galaxy". Crikey, it sounds like 15 games crammed into one but, if anyone can pull it off, it's Will Wright. Go Will, go!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Ah, the infamous S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It's been development for so many years we've lost count but is finally due early next year - and it's made it into the list. Despite waiting for it for an age, and the fact that it's been streamlined a bit and some of GSC's original features planned for the game left by the wayside, we're still keen, keen, keen to experience the survival-FPS and explore the wasteland surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant while scavenging for artefacts and tackling mutated beasts and fellow fortune seekers.

Hellgate: London
2007 sees ex-Blizzard dev maestro Bill Roper return with Hellgate: London. Hell's demons have waged war on the Big Smoke in a FPS-RPG that melds sci-fi and fantasy, and the idea of roaming around London and twatting the shit out of stuff is very appealing. The phrase "infinite replayability" is being attached to the title, with the promise of dynamically generated levels, items, enemies and events - so kind of like Diablo. You play a hi-tech Templar Knight character who, as well being a wielder of magic, is additionally kitted out with hefty firepower, armour and plenty of skills to battle Hell's forces.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
Mythic Entertainment's MMOG based on Games Workshop's fantasy tabletop game is one of two titles in the genre due next year that we're eager to get dirty hands on. Staying faithful to the rich and hugely popular Warhammer world, a major focus is Realm versus Realm combat - PvP mass fighting mayhem, which Mythic has plenty of experience with thanks to developing MMOG Dark Age of Camelot - and having seen the title at this year's E3, we can honestly say that our inner dwarf is frenziedly grooming his beard in anticipation of its arrival.

The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar
Turbine's LoTR game happens to be the second of 2007's MMOGs that we're dying to leap into. We've been big fans of Tolkien's novel - and videogames - for years and, truth to tell, since the dawn of the MMOG we've dreamed of adventuring in a Middle-earth-powered persistent world. Turbine's experience in the massively multiplayer online gaming genre should, all being well, mean the gameplay and game mechanics are rock solid but the real, real pull for us is the fact that we can team up with other folks and roam the hills and dales of the famous fantasy world.

Unreal Tournament 2007
The latest instalment in Epic's veteran multiplayer FPS series looks simply amazing. Years of experience with the genre really should mean the developer has fine-tuned the gameplay close to perfection, and the new content its introducing in UT 2007 - the massive, Strider-like vehicle, for example - is awesome. It's also, of course, benefiting from running on Epic's stunning Unreal Engine 3.0, and the last time we saw the game in action our jaws hit the floor and hung around in the carpet pile for a while before re-attaching to our faces. Beautiful, hot action spitting out of every polygon and killer game modes - we can't wait.

Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Summer 2007, eh? Well, yes it's still a fair old way off, but we're standing firm in the face of adversity and refuse to let our little tapping toes of anticipation kick off their dancing shoes and admit defeat. After finishing Episode One, we were desperate to immediately get on with the show but unfortunately that was never, ever going to happen. We're an impatient bunch. Anyway, Episode Two - more Freeman, more quality Valve FPS-ness, outside City 17, in the woods with massive Striders on the attack. And, its coming bundled with Portal and Team Fortress 2. Now that's not to be sneezed at.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Quake Wars appeared like a bolt out the blue at E3 2005 and we've wanted it - like, really, really wanted it - ever since. In development at Splash Damage - the chaps behind Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - the game's a team-based, class-based multiplayer showdown between the GDF against the Strogg war machine that features FPS and vehicular combat and even includes RTS-style elements. Truly sounding incredible, it also looks the mutt's nuts - thanks in part to it employing id Software's MegaTexture rendering technology, which is able to render large, highly detailed and un-tiled outdoor environments. All we can say is: Battlefield, beware.
Check out the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars game page here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/search.php?id=7634).

Bioshock
Weirdness lurks beneath the waves. Its name, is Bioshock. And it does, look rather bloody good. We shall stop, putting commas in funny places for emphasis now. Anyway, Irrational Games' FPS-RPG takes to the seabed where lies a failed utopia reeling in the aftermath of a war between genetically modified humans. Oozing creepiness, it also comes across as a game that could genuinely be quite disturbing - wicked! And we've said it before but we'll say it again: the decision to use an Art Deco style for the environments is genius. Plus, we're finding the mixture of cool and odd characters utterly compelling.

Supreme Commander
Want an epic RTS? Say hello to Gas Powered Games' and Chris Taylor's Supreme Commander. A spiritual sequel to Taylor's classic Total Annihilation, it holds the potential for hundreds of thousands of units in a single battle, each built to scale and sporting weapons physically simulated for less rock-paper-scissors guessing and more realism. A mass amount of on-screen action calls for serious strategy, and thankfully the interface makes managing your massive army easy-peasy. Plus, the gigantic experimental units - such as the Aeon Galactic Colossus that towers at almost 100ft high and sports twin gravity guns and devastating lasers that blast from its eyes - are pure RTS heaven.

One of my Renegade Legion guildmates woks for the company making that, he's the global PR guy for it. We asked him some questions about it:
1. is it good
Subjective question. My response: Yes, I love playing it, but it is NOT a traditional FPS as it is not on-rails. Imagine playing a mixture of Fallout, WoW and Half Life and you kinda get the point - it's a First Person/Survival Horror/RPG hybrid. People expecting a traditional shooter will be disappointed, but the mix of genres and the way the work together are a great combination for me.
2. is it ever coming out
Yes, it will be release. March, in fact.
3. Is it going to be as ugly as GA? (GA is another guildmate)
Nothing, nothing is that ugly. On a side note, even though the tech is up to four years old now, it will uses Shader 3.0, Parallax Mapping, etc. They have continually worked on the engine to deliver a great-looking game
4. Could you PROMISE us that it is ACTUALLY REALLY going to be RELEASED THIS TIME?
Yes. For the second time
Think of it as a MSFPRPG:
Massively Singleplayer First Person Roleplaying Game...
One thing it most certainly is not is an on-rails traditional FPS

Summer 2007 - July to September
Bioshock - Xbox 360
You already know that this game looks epic as hell, so there's no need to tell you that. If you didn't already, then I'll tell you now: this game looks epic as hell. Anyway, the term of the month for Bioshock is "emergent gameplay." That's a fancy way of showing off how smart a game is: things that happen that were never originally intended to happen. A developer spells out a situation in where this term comes into play, during a fight he had with a large creature that had snuck up on him. In order to kill it, he purposefully tripped an alarm to summon attack drones onto himself, disabled the alarm, hacked the andriods, and used them to fight the monster, then he turned around and noticed a large propane tank that made for a nice explosive, a nearby baddie who snuck into the fight happened to throw a grenade at him, which he redirected back at the big creature using telekinesis, and then finally he used his powers to grab a stuffed teddy bear out of the air, set it on fire from the propane tank explosion, and hurl it as a stuffed molotov cocktail. Note that none of these situations are scripted affairs. Expect Bioshock to come up with a lot of situations where you're going to say, "Hey, why haven't I been able to do that in a first person shooter before?"
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors - Wii
While the next true sequel to Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest IX: Guard of the Starry Night, has been officially announced as a DS game, this entry onto the Wii looks very interesting. You will traverse a traditional DQ world in an on-rails RPG game, with a very unique twist. During your fights with monsters, you can use the remote as a sword, to hurl spells, or perform special techniques, as well as to defend against attacks.
Blacksite: Area 51 - PS3/XB360
When asked about the story for this game, the executive producer urged questioners to search for "blacksite" on Wikipedia. This humans-versus-aliens first person shooter tells a dark story of secret US government projects, veiling it in a politically-charged grim screen. The game will feature squad-based gameplay, where you will utilize one-button context-sensitive commands, and will be rotating around your squad's morale. If morale is high, they will become aggressive and highly effective, but if it starts dropping, you'll be in a lot of trouble.
Rogue Warrior - PS3/XB360
From the makers of Oblivion comes a new game based on the SEALs, pitting the player in a tactical shooter set in Korea. Expect a single player campaign reminiscent of SOCOM and Rainbow Six, but a multiplayer that seems pretty interesting. Online games will pit 24 players on a map that is very unique: the map will be drawn like a jigsaw puzzle, and each team can decide what "piece" they want to be their base on the map. These "pieces" will be anything from tight indoor grounds to wide open battlefields, and apart from the two bases that each team picks out, the game will randomly select the rest of the pieces. This results in over 200 different map combinations, with many more available after additional map tiles become available for download.
Half-Life 2: Orange - PS3/XB360
If for some reason you haven't played the original Half-Life 2 yet, there's little reason to avoid it now. Aside from it's PC incarnations, HL2 has been released on the Xbox, and is now coming out on next-gen consoles. Half-Life 2: Orange, however, will be completely jam packed with content. The game includes the original Half-Life 2, the two follow-ups Episode One and Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. That's more than enough revolutionary first-person shooter content for one person.
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
With the upcoming rise in co-op gaming, more and more games are featuring two main characters that players will follow throughout their adventures. Kane and Lynch are two very disturbing characters that cast a unique atmosphere on the game; Kane being a troubled mercenary, and Lynch being a pill-addicted psycopath, making them sound more interesting than the normal trust/relationship based partners that are beginning to appear in games. While you will control these two characters, you will also have control over a large crew that will follow you, covering your backs at all times, and offering up their weapons and items throughout each mission.
Warhawk - Playstation 3
Originally a launch title for the PS3, this game's delay came as a surprise to some. Warhawk was originally the poster child for Sony's Sixaxis technology. According to the developers, however, things weren't as smooth as they could have been, so they took advantage of the delay to tweak the controls. Rumors that the on-foot portions of the game, among other features such as ground-based vehicles, arose speculating that these components had been nixed, but they have been since confirmed false. Players can also look forward to pitching and yawing their Sixaxises in online multiplayer dogfights.
Also coming out in Summer 2007:
Unreal Tournament 2007 - Playstation 3
Hot Shot Golf 5 - Playstation 3
Hour of Victory - Xbox 360
Stuntman 2 - Xbox 360
