View Full Version : Way to fuck up the iPhone Jobs

Per Gizmodo, the iPhone will NOT have an SDK.
Any chance of them being a "revolutionary" phone platform just went out the window.

my co-worker really wants to get one. Personally I see it as a total waste of money. Only revolutionary thing I require my phone to do is to make and recieve phonecalls, and store phone numbers. In case you are wondering though, I have a razor.

I'm a technophile so I was looking forward to the iPhone... now it'll just be another tree in a forest of locked down phones.

Yep, thats going to be the nail in the coffin. Pretty sure that Motorola's smart phone, which is Linux based, can run a whole lot of home made apps. GG Apple.

Then buy one of those. They exist already.
What we who have an imagination (and are non-technophobic) want is a revolutionary platform.
As it stands almost all current third-party phone applications are Java based, and we all know how horrible java applications run.
An actual SDK would open up the huge possibilities of the multi-touch interface, but instead they decided that all third party applications will be "AJAX" in the web-browser which is fucking stupid.
Didn't they learn their lesson with Macs?
More third-party software support = greater adoption.

the only thing apple learned from making macs and ipods, is that all you have to do is say its "cooler" and it becomes better.

Problem is majority of the shit included on iphone is useless. Only time I use my cell phone, really, is when I am ether driving or going somewhere. If I am in the office, I use my office phone and my office, computer. If I am at home, i use my home computer and phone respectivly. So, that automatically makes the screen and most of visual shit nearly 100% useless, because i cant look at it when i drive, nor do i usuallly look at my screen all that much when I am just hanging out somewhere out of my house. Other than the ability to make or recieve phone calls nothing on that phone is usefull.
What that phone IS probably great for is to have so that you can slack out in class if you are in high school or ocllege. Looks like you can browse web play video games do all kinds of shit on it. Then again back in school when I went to class I did so to learn shit, so once again all the hoohas that phone has are useless.

So you never go on a road trip with anybody and wanted to watch a couple movies, fly and been bored out of your mind, nor have you been out and about and decided to go see a movie and needed movie times.
And I guess you've never done yard work and wanted to listen to music yet be able to hear your phone over the sound of the lawn mower.
I'd rather carry an iPhone than a cell phone, my iPod, and my pocket PC.

So you never go on a road trip with anybody and wanted to watch a couple movies,
im usually the one driving
fly and been bored out of your mind,
Airplanes have personal LCD tvs and they show movies on those.
nor have you been out and about and decided to go see a movie and needed movie times.
usually i just come w/e, and play the arcade games or go for a walk or something if i come like 15min before movie starts.
And I guess you've never done yard work and wanted to listen to music yet be able to hear your phone over the sound of the lawn mower.
i dont do yardwork, thats what mexicans are for.

LOL monroe! Damn mexicans...
I'm kinda split here between monroe and craysh. With phones currently - having games and shit and web browsing is kinda pointless like monroe said. With the whole being able to use a PC, or being in a situation where you are in transit and don't need the phone other than for calls, etc.
HOWEVER, I can see it being of great importance in the future, when phones are able to act as like a personal PC, and a GPS, etc. Maybe even a credit card or ID or keycard (as random ideas - don't debate their posibility coz I know they sound pretty far fetched based on todays world) iunno... It greatly reduces the amount of 'shit' you need to have with you at any one time.

Same goes for AJAX....

i know ive lived in this same city for years, and i know that there is a mcdonalds just down down the street from here. but how am i supposed to get a milkshake and a big mac unless i can plot out my trip via gps on my cell phone, after im done watching a movie on the 3 inch screen, all while draining the battery life so that when someone needs to call me, i can respond "sorry, i would love to answer the call, but my battery is just about dead, atleast i didnt get lost on the way to the mcdonalds though!". haha just kidding, its cingular/at&t only. theres no signal up here anyways, and by up here, i mean in north america.

i heard once an english man made it on to the island with a flashlight, and a pack of wild aborigines attacked him, stole the flash light and then tried to eat it. then the very next night, a ferocious gang of biker kangaroo wandered into the aborigine's camp and attacked them. the abbo that ate the flashlight tried to run and hide with the rest of his tribe, but the kangaroo were able to see him glowing in the dark. it was a tragic story. but one that tells of the divide we civilized people have with those savages on that tiny little island called Australia.

Ahh ok the pic is working now, I didn't even know what it was when i was at work before. I dunno what your tribal peoples were like (I guess this would be indians), but ours do/did a lot of painting. Mostly in caves, but a lot on themselves. Obviously Australia is fairly dry for the most part, so paints were often just basically crushed rock powder with a small amount of moisture in them.
The serpent is a strong symbol to the aboriginals of Aus (we have a lot of snakes), so its common to paint yourself to look like a serpent has just unleashed all over you.

[old man voice] You kids now-a-days with your fancy schmancy picture phones, and mobile internet, and pictures whenever the feeling strikes you instead of bringing a camera ahead of time.
In MY day OUR cellphones weighed 10 pounds, and had to be carried in a bag.
You had to have a large contraption to connect it to your car antenna and you had to drive to the next town to get reception!
DAMN WHIPPER SNAPPERS!

Oh if you think the no SDK thing was bad check this out:
iPhone has browsing features but don't support flash. Wtf kind of browser don't support flash.
iPhone's battery is like the same as iPod, i.e. it is sealed within it. When you run out of juice you can't swap the battery if you're on the go. If the batteries dies, you gotta feed Apple $$$ for them to "replace" your battery.
I don't think I'm getting one any time soon.

http://www.rentcell.com/images2/att-coverage-map.gif
missleading because even in our area of wisconsin, coverage is limited (non-existant, and its still shown green, even though local retailers who sell contracts dont carry att/cingular because it doesnt have coverage here.)
http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/cellphone/images/verizon_map1.jpg
similar but still better than att.
and my carrier, alltel
http://www.myrateplan.com/wireless_plans/imgs/single/nat_maps/alltel.gif
basically only a couple white spots. 99% of the country atleast has roaming coverage. and the actual calling area is still greater than verizon or att.
us cellular is actually pretty good, bout the same as alltel, except splotchier in rural areas around here.

I understand the argument, right now I have an mp3 player, pc, and camera that do all the things my phone can do, and they do it better, but hopefully that won't always be the case.
Think about it, if when the idea for a computer small enough to fit in someone's home everyone sat around going "I have a brain that processes data, what do I need the machine for?", where would we be now? It's not a question of wether you have other machines that do the same job as your phone, it's a question of when they will release a handheld platform that does all those jobs more efficiently...that's what I see this whole post as being about, the fact that a company has the neccessary knowledge to improve the device and chooses not to do so regardless.
I don't know about anyone else, but I want a fucking star ocean (for fans of the game) style communicator.

I had gotten a razr but every time I'd hit a button it seemed like it'd take 5 secs for it to register.
Was that just my phone? I traded it in for a blackjack.
