It looks kind of stupid, like they are trying to make computers for old retarded people.
"Oh wow, this isn't a computer, its a cool table"
I can see how it would be useful though.

funny, because apple will be using multitouch technology too in the iphone and everyones like "WOW THATS SO COOL!" ms uses it in the greatest ways possible where its actually cool, and its stupid. LOL OK

I saw the preliminaries for this quite some time ago thanks to digg. It could be a very fun thing, and if they do things right (it's Microsoft, so it's a crap shoot) and if they work hard to make it more than just a novelty, then it could indeed change the way we do things.
P.S. It wasn't Minority report, they had an isolinear holographic display. The Island had the table bad-assedness.

yeah, putting phones and zunes and stuff on the thing and trading music and shit looks really cool, and the bank card thing was cool, but everything else seemed useless. why would i need one of thoes things to "sort the day's photos"? and fuck writing an email longer than "hi mom" with that thing.

God knows that my pics stay in my phone until I run out of room because I'm too lazy to go through all the crap of pulling it off of it.

I also like the idea of placing my cellphone on the table, getting directions and plans set up on the table, then dragging it to my cellphone to download the GPS directions etc.
Setting stuff like that up is easier on the computer, but you still have to go through the rigamaroll of using proprietary programs for each thing, and then trying to get a connection (usually an cable connection, just what I need: yet another cable in my laptop bag >.>)

yeah, the thought of downloading a song and getting it on an mp3 player by popping it on a table is pretty cool. those two chicks trading songs between their zune though were probably unaware that it'd disappear after three days or three plays =(

Never thought the iphone was super cool, you guys are so defensive Oo
The multitouch technology looks cool but has no real point imo.

If implemented right, it could literally be a revolution in our every day life.

Yay! Proprietaryness!

Proprietary wouldn't work in this case.
The way they're marketing it, they want everyone to be able to use one. So I'd imagine you'd have to have something like bluetooth.

I'd like to know exactly how it identifies the shit thats put on the screen... I can't seem to find any info on that... : / Bluetooth would make sense though...

wifi is the biggy. the zunes were able to transfer songs and pictures with that because of their wifi. the gps units, cameras, phones in those demos all had wifi. so while it may be able to use bluetooth, it wont be the main thing.

I can see Wifi but that would be a kind of a sticky thing IMHO. Bluetooth would make more sense because it's more powerful and has higher bandwidth at short ranges, (unless we're talking about 802.11N that is).
Bluetooth is also more effective in security, but like linux they have to know what they're doing in locking it down.

Hopefully this will just be a stepping stone. 2D manipulation is simple for a computer to do, even with 6-12 points of contacts that Surface seems capable of.
It's the 3D manipulation that will need to come from this that I think will be amazing.
