Sorry kid this isn't religion to me, so no I wouldn't "believe in it" in the first place. I think they produce another side to the controversy. As for it all being a crock of shit.. I don't think so.. but thats the beauty of having an open perspective, you should try it :>

Hence why I put a question mark at the end of the thread title.. and why I said discuss..

I love how you talk about my sex life like you know intemate details about just whats going on here in Australia, half the fuck way around the world from your current location.

I was going to post something similar to Dammes post, only quite a lot larger, quoting big Al Gore and other awesome scientists in the field, showing figures of just how many reports put the big blame on CO2 emissions and man...but I figured Id shoot for the insult that resulted in the least effort, that yielded the best result, as I had just got done proving that not only does God not have any influence on this world (if he/she/it exists at all), but that our morals are also not derrived from thousands year old scripture.

I guess the insult option was a winner.

As for argument, I said discuss, hes the one who assumed I believe everything I saw in that documentary, and proceeded to tell me not to reproduce. VERY INTELLIGENT ADDITION TO THE THREAD INDEED!

edit: Anyway, I don't buy into reading/watching documentaries and saying.. WOOOOOOOOOW this all must be 100% true! I know when things sound a little lopsided when it comes to documentaries. To me this global warming epidemic is a little overblown, and is much more complicated than blaming it on one variable when it realistically factors on endless variables.

This isn't about Charlie's lack of a sex life, but if he can't help flaming, I can't help it either, its in my nature. :>

One of the people they interview is from the University of Ottawa, so it struck my interest because they have a pretty big program regarding the entire dilemma, I guess I wouldn't pass off a theory/idea or scientific information as 'a crock of shit', but I certainly do take it into consideration, just like I don't pass off the global warming 'threat' as a crock of shit, but I take it into consideration.

I wouldn't argue that the earth is warming, but I disagree to the cause.
Things like solar flares (Very active lately), the fact that our magnetic poles are shifting, and the fact of urban heating (Where cities get hotter because concrete doesn't absorb the heat as well as grass and soil).
Not only that, (as much as I hate to beat a dead horse) your rational that "I would agree that global warming was a crock of shit, if the earth wasn't warming" is fundamentally flawed. Not 30 years ago people were saying that we were heading into a new ice age. Why? Because the earth was cooling.
It's ambiguous conclusions like that that make people think that California is a huge polluter because of it's smog and air quality. It's not, China and the winds are screwing that state over, but because nobody pays attention to the larger picture they automatically think it's a local problem instead of a larger thing. (Like the sun and the Earth temperature)

What I've learned and taken in is.. well, there is way more to it than just co2.

Just based on the major changes the earth has gone through completely on its own (no help from us!) where its reshaped area (back during the ice ages, glaciers would carve the area and slice the landscape as it moved/shifted.. this was before I watched any of this global warming information..

Things like solar flares (Very active lately), the fact that our magnetic poles are shifting, and the fact of urban heating (Where cities get hotter because concrete doesn't absorb the heat as well as grass and soil).

Solar flares do not cause a constant rise in the temperature. They cause magnetic storms which can and often do cause havoc on our satelites, and power stations.

Concrete not absorbing the heat would actually lead to the earth being COOLER, cause if its not absorbing, its reflecting...

30 years ago we didnt have super computer clusters that we could feed all our data into the models we have, that can predict how shit works.
We can get a decently accurate weather forecast of up to 3 months away from present day, irrespective of the small inconsistancies like "it didnt rain where I live exactly, so thats wrong".

So when scientists tell you that pooling fresh water in greenland, as a result of the earths temperature rising, will eventually mix with the salt water in the north atlantic pump, and reverse it, which will essentially reverse the earths radiator, will put the earth into another ice age...you better listen.

I always wondered why "scientists" ignore things like how much shit volcano's etc throw up into the air.

If more volcano's went off, it would actually help the problem. The shit that volcano's spew act more as a shield against the sun than a blanket for the heat like CO2 does. It lowers the temperature of the planet by quite a lot (read: 1-1.5 degrees).

i don't think it co2 from humans

i'm no scientist or anything and i barely follow it, but i think it has to do with other pollution, like cars, factories etc

CO2 from cars and factories...are from humans. They arnt talking about the co2 we breathe out, its the co2 we create when we burn carbon based fuel sources, such as petrolium or coal. They are all human based causes of CO2 that we have alternatives for...that, for some fucked up reason, the majority dont care to change to.

ps LOL a charlie's deleted post
I was editing it, cause the smily faces in it fucked up the syntax...its all better now

Oh, and I'd also like to add:
+1'C in the last three decades does not seem too terrifying...

When +1'C in 30 years is the difference between greenland staying frozen, or pooling and beginning to melt, and large portions of ice in the south america's begins to retreat, or gigantic ice shelves off the coast of alaska break off (100's of square miles in a single chunk) that were previously stable for the past 600,000 years....then 1'C in 30 years is quite terrifying.

Consider 3'C change.

Because the number is so small in magnitude, dont discount the effect it can have.

If you had that value as a representation of the actual energy change, youd see it as a big deal.

Victis
June 3rd, 2007, 02:39 PM
Yeah 1 degree can be massive.. the numbers can fool someone who doesn't realize how small a percentage can make a huge impact..

I just don't believe a lot of the information we're getting.. we are bombarded with information with a bias to produce an effect on the population.. this Global warming threat is one thing amongst a grocery list of major issues that exist on this planet..

What people don't realize is the momentum effects like this have, and slowing them down, stopping, and even reversing them takes a ridiculous amount of time in our eyes.. The average human being has little to no patience to be able to work collectively for an extended period of time, especially for something they'll never benefit from themselves (except maybe some gratification for helping the race as a whole) .. the problem is human nature in a lot of cases..

Remember all that talk about the ozone layer? HOLY SHIT ITS GOT THESE HUGE HOLES IN IT! ..we discovered the existence of what we call the ozone layer back in the 1980s.. we've known about it for less than 30 years, and we start making massive claims about whats happening to it and where we're headed because we keep eating away at it (aside from the 2 massive holes over the poles)..

Just a lot of things to consider, and with all the ignorance out there its hard to explain all those variables, so I guess its just easier to incite panic rather than actually explain things as a theory or idea, and not as fact... presenting it as a fact will get action a lot faster than any idea so.. politics..bleh.

Victis. I don't think that the reason people don't believe in man-made global warming because they are unaware of the scale that 1 degree truely is. Afaik; Australia contributes the single most savage degree of damage to the current atmosphere. Not just because of the amount of mining and processing we do, but the way in which we do it. I approve of the process as it will inevitably destroy humanity and that is something we should be trying to accelerate; so John Howard for the win on that account (and that account only, because otherwise he's a complete fucking prick).

Yeah we discovered the Ozone layer recently, doesnt change the fact that since then, the ammount of Ozone over the pole reduced at a fast rate... Now could you develop what information you dont believe in?

Except that natural disaster dont happen in 26 years, and again, the Ozone layer has not much to do with global warming...

And the Greenhouse effect is indeed natural, but we're amplificating the effect (not only with Carbonic gaz btw...), and temperature shouldnt go up that fast, you have to realize that the last major change in temperature that happened lately didnt happen in 100 years... it was a lot lot lot longer. Or, it was caused by a rare event (Giant Vulcan explosion or Huge meteorite fall that cause a massive dust cloud keeping the sun ray from hitting the heart -> major glaciation... but those are like extremely rare and it's not what's happening atm)

And I'd just like to know... Why would you think so much people are making this up?

People aren't 'making it up' - its widely accepted as FACT, thats the problem I see.. to say its one thing or the other in this case is almost impossible.. I mean really, look at all the variables..

As for global warming being caused by co2... I don't buy it. I would say we are having an effect on the environment in heavier ways.. mining the minerals and natural resources till we've sucked the planet dry could in turn be our demise.. there is always information and more new information being introduced that these 'facts' are more theory than anything.. there is definitely some solid scientific evidence out there.. but as for co2 specifically being the cause of the spikes in temperature.. I don't think so, not with the evidence that higher temperatures actually create co2.. heat is not a product of co2, co2 is a product of heat...

Indeed CO2 isnt the only gaz amplificating the greenhouse effect, there's also Methan, or just water vapor, which is causing most of the greenhouse effect, but we dont have that much influence on that actually. (I dont know the exacts english term so pardon me if those are incorrect).

Everyone talks about Co2 because that's the gaz we have the most influence on and we're responsible of most of its emission. I have few knowledge about the gaz itself, so cant really answer you about the heat producing Co2, but that sounds fishy if you ask me... And saying Co2 doesnt have any influence on the heat spike we're having now is not true... it's not the only cause but it plays a role.

OF COURSE we're doing a lot of things harming the earth(and global warming is more than using fossil fuels btw), but it's already good people start caring about one issue (which isnt minor) and are trying to fix it in their way, then we'll talk about the others (Over fishing, phosphate and chlorate pollution etc etc).

You're right. It's being accepted as "fact" by a little over half of the scientists and almost all of the media.
The fact is, that by calling it a "fact" they're delegitimizing their point. Anybody who knows ANYTHING about science knows that their are no facts in science. Only a hypothes that have yet to be disproven.
