if you got an elite, get it for sure. the quality via hdmi is basically as good as all the other HD DVD players ive seen. i tried it through component though and it wasnt nearly as clear. if you get a decent picture out of VGA youre prolly better off using that than component. but i must say, just compared the regular king kong dvd (upscaling to 1080i via component) and the king kong HD DVD via HDMI (1080p). jaw dropping. also tried an HD DVD on a non high def tv, looks like shit. but if you got a 360 pick up the add on if youre gunna get an hd dvd player, especially if you got an elite. although if youre using a non HD tv, obviously skip it, and skip everything and go tend to your corn fields >:O.

Good review and thanks for it!

This is a very noob question, but when did new TV's being built have HD as pretty much a default option? Thanks!

Why especially with the Elite? And how much does it cost?

especially elite because it has HDMI output. most tv's you cant get 1080p signals via component, and only some via VGA. so the only way to get the maximum resolution your hd-dvd supports, youll need HDMI out for most tvs. if your TV doesnt display 1080p it doesnt matter, since you can get 1080i or 720p signals via component. youll only see a slight improvement between component and hdmi at these lower resolutions. but the basic difference is that component is still an analog signal, and HDMI keeps both your audio and video in its pure digital format.

as for HDTVs recently, there are still new tvs coming out that arent HD. EDTV and SDTV are both cheaper options for getting digital/hd signals. EDTV is a tv that can receive digital channels, but doesnt have a display with a high enough resolution to display it in true HD. SDTVs are just regular tvs with digital tuners built in. the digital tuner basically allows the sdtv and edtv to in effect, downscale the image to a resolution that fits on those tvs. HDTVs are better just because they display actual high definition (720p to 1080i/p), and since theres more and more HD channels available, as well as game consoles and such where high definition is available, people want the best they can get. its america. the overwhelming majority of people still have your basic non HD tube tvs, but when looking for a new tv, the obvious choice is to get something with lasting power. why buy a tv thats going to be basically obsolete in a couple years? thats why new TVs are basically HDTVs since these companies know HD is basically going to be the new standard within the next few years. by 2009, all over the air channels will have to be digital, so its only a matter of time tbh. although, in europe people dont seem to care as much. probably because their standard television signal has better resolution than ours. as well as their dvds and such. so while the jump from PAL to HD is still significant, its still not as noticeable as the difference between NTSC and HD.
