14 year old girl walked into his store, lingered around for a bit, went up to the counter, store manager happened to be on register at the time, and she asks for grand theft auto: san andreas. he sells it to her. girl walks out, and walks back in with an ESRB representative and my district manager. guy gets fired on the spot.

funny thing is, is that the ESRB isn't a rating system to live or die by. I love these states that are trying to make it that way. The rating system is there for the PARENTS to gauge what is ok for their children, it shouldn't be the responsibility of the store clerk...

while i agree that it's up to the parents to decide what their children should be playing, i do think that retailers share the responsibility in some way. in the same way someone behind the register at a deli shouldn't be selling alcohol to someone underage, i wouldn't sell grand theft auto to a 15 year old. it's just not for them, and i don't want to put it into their hands without their parents knowing exactly what's going on.

April 19th, 2007, 12:38 AM
While the statement you made is quite true about selling alcohol to minors would be the wrong thing to do, you could also look at this ESRB rating thing as compared to an obese person ordering food at a BBQ joint, should the people want to sell the greasy food to the poor guy? No not really cause in the end that greasy food could very well kill him, but will they sell it to him? Hell yes they will, they may be the people selling said product to the person, but it's not necessarily their duty to control what the person does.

Even so, the ESRB rating system is a freaking joke to begin with and video game violence and such is hardly the end of the world. It's not like the game comes with a loaded gun and directions to mimic the actions done in the game.

Idiots ruin everything good though. Not everyone plays a game and is like "Well, that was a fun bit of escapism!". For the thousands of us that know it's a game, there's a dozen jerks that do think they should mimic it. However it shouldn't be the game makers responsiblity when something goes wrong, or even the person selling the game. You're very right in saying they don't supply a gun, ammo, training on how to use firearms.
There always has been and always will be violent people, not much you can do about it.

If you can't think for yourself at 15, I doubt you'll fix that in 3 years. Any 15 years old with a good education (both school and parents) should be able to relativise what he sees on the screen. The problem isn't the game, but the education.

Do you know the amount of changes a person goes through from 15 to 18? 15 you're really just starting to hit the mental aspect of puberty. A TON changes in those three years.
Don't say you didn't, because you know you did.
Alrus

You're partly right, but talking about relativisation of what you see on a screen, you should have learned that kind of thing way before you're 15... And you should also be able to think for yourself, you don't become a clever citizen in just 3 years, even tho there's a lot of change that happen during those.

lol exactly, we all go through puberty, most of us see violent movies, play violent games, watch porn, drink well before the magical 18, yet we aren't all out mimicking our on screen antics. If someone is that easily influenced by what they see on a screen than it is their parents responibility to monitor that.

I understand that, and I agree. But not every parent cares for their kids, and not every kid thinks like every "normal" person. Maybe they can tell the difference between what is fake on a silver screen and real-life, but then maybe they want to act out that movie scene in real-life. It's impossible to tell why any person would ever want to do something they see in a movie/game/book, let alone if that's what really influenced them.

Yeah, you're right. Just don't think everyone else should suffer because of the weakest link. I mean whether or not a kid plays this game, if he's prone to violence he's going to snap sooner or later and go shoot some people. And as cold as it is, people die, people kill other people - it is always going to happen. It's ridiculous to blame it on something that has been around for maybe 20 - 30 years, when violence itself is older than recorded history.
