Radio personality Don Imus, left, and Rev. Al Sharpton appear face-to-face on Sharpton's radio show on April 9. Imus issued another apology for referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" on his morning show last week.

NEW YORK - Don Imus had a hot seat on the other side of the microphone Monday, appearing on the Rev. Al Sharpton’s radio show and enduring more criticism for his offensive comments about the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
Imus issued another apology for referring to members of the team as “nappy-headed hos.” Sharpton called the comments “abominable” and “racist” and repeated his demand that Imus be fired.
“Our agenda is to be funny and sometimes we go too far. And this time we went way too far,” Imus said on “The Al Sharpton Show.”

The meeting prompted a series of testy exchanges, and Imus grew visibly frustrated at times. During one exchange, Imus said he can’t win with “you people.” Sharpton was clearly irritated by that remark.
In another encounter, Sharpton said, “If you walk away from this unscathed ...”
“How am I unscathed by this?” Imus interrupted. “Don’t you think I’m humiliated?”
During commercial breaks, Sharpton walked out of the studio and said few words to Imus.

April 9: Don Imus puts into context and apologizes for the comments he made about the Rutgers women's basketball team.
MSNBC

Earlier Monday, on his own radio show, Imus called himself “a good person” who made a bad mistake.
“Here’s what I’ve learned: that you can’t make fun of everybody, because some people don’t deserve it,” he said on his show, which is nationally syndicated to millions of listeners. “And because the climate on this program has been what it’s been for 30 years doesn’t mean that it has to be that way for the next five years or whatever because that has to change, and I understand that.”
He pointed to his involvement with the Imus Ranch, a working cattle ranch for children with cancer and blood disorders in New Mexico. Ten percent of the children who come to the ranch are black, he said.
“I’m not a white man who doesn’t know any African-Americans,” he said.
On the radio show, Sharpton said that Imus’ good deeds do not make up for what he said about the Rutgers team, which includes eight black women.
“This is not about whether you’re a good man,” Sharpton said. “What you said was racist.”
Imus said he hoped to meet the Rutgers players and their parents and coaches, and that he was grateful for the appearance on Sharpton’s nationally syndicated show.
“It’s not going to be easy, but I’m not looking for it to be easy,” Imus said.
Meanwhile, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and about 50 others marched Monday outside the Chicago offices of NBC, the General Electric Co. subsidiary that owns MSNBC, carrying signs and shouting “Imus must go.” Jackson said Imus’ comments contribute to “a climate of degradation” and stem from a lack of blacks as program hosts.
Imus made the now infamous remark during his show Wednesday.
The Rutgers team, which includes eight black women, had lost the day before in the NCAA women’s championship game. Imus was speaking with producer Bernard McGuirk about the game when the exchange began on “Imus in the Morning.” The show is broadcast on more than 70 stations and MSNBC.
“That’s some rough girls from Rutgers,” Imus said. “Man, they got tattoos ... .”
“Some hardcore hos,” McGuirk said.
“That’s some nappy-headed hos there, I’m going to tell you that,” Imus said.

Imus apologized on the air Friday, but his mea culpa has not quieted the uproar.
James E. Harris, president of the New Jersey chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, demanded Sunday that Imus “resign or be terminated immediately.”
Allison Gollust, a spokeswoman for MSNBC, said the network considers Imus’ comments “deplorable” and was reviewing the matter (MSNBC.com is a joint venture between NBC-Universal and Microsoft. MSNBC TV is wholly owned by NBC-Universal).
Karen Mateo, a spokeswoman for CBS Radio — Imus’ employer and the owner of his New York radio home, WFAN-AM — said the company was “disappointed” in Imus’ actions and characterized his comments as “completely inappropriate.”

If you havent heard yet, radio personality Don Imus was suspended today for 2 weeks after making racist comments about the Rutgers womens basketball team. What do you think should have happened to Imus? Is this the right outcome? Let us know what you think.

Personally, I think this is a free speech issue. People should be able to say exactly what they want. They should also be prepared to meet the consequences in the form of reactions from those they speak of.

Do I agree with the "nappy headed hoes" comment, absolutely not; I saw their pictures and they don't have "nappy" heads (their hair is straightened + there are 2 white girls on the team I assume Imus wasn't including). I do however, defend his right to say what he said. If people don't like what he has to say, they will turn him off.

Is it just me, or has the black portion of US society done such an awesome job in trying to cut down on racism and biggotry, that its to a point now where if a black dude calls a white guy a cracka, or another black dude a nigger, homie, nappie headed g banga, and all the other bullshit (that would otherwise be instantly picked up and villified against if a white dude would say it), and completley get away with it scott free ?

I dunno, I can understand Rev. Al's point of view, but he should really choose his fights more wisely than a completly harmless comment like that, he should be seeking out the actual fucking hate crimes commited against blacks, instead of airing the bullshit that spews out of idiot comedians mouths and labeling it a modern day attrocity.

Sorry Rev., but its not, its just some moron using a colloquialism without knowing what the fuck hes talking about, an attrocity would be a kkk gang mudering a black dude, or black dudes getting thrown in prison / pulled over by cops and beaten, purely because of the color of their skin.

Stick to the real issues for fuck sake, if you are going to fight for a cause, kill it at the roots, these pissy little leafs dont do a damn thing to the real issue.

There probably is a bit of a reversal going on. Al Sharpton is a politician and they tend to spin things for their own gain. This is a chance for him to gain some national attention before, most likely, another failed primary campaign.

He will never win.
Hes got the most fucked up demographic behind him its not funny.
The bible belt, are mostly the folks in the south, which are his primary source of votes, and well guess where most the blank angst comes from ?

If you think im being a racist, you need to take a look at the bigger picture, im being a realist. He doesnt have a chance in hell of being elected, no matter how much he plays his bible-bashing card.

Theres just far too many bible-bashing racists in the US, which is part of his problem. He cant attack them without being labled an anti-christian, or anti-religious zion thats pushing some conspiracy theory bullshit that im sure those in the belt are renowned for creating when their brains are suddenly shoved into a realm of reason and logic.

No apologies to those of you who live in the southern states by the way, you guys are the reason we havnt found a cure for parkinson's or alzheimer's yet. Thanks guys, thanks a fucking lot.

what a rant that turned out to be, lol.

I think he runs to build his organization and influence (not because he thinks he can win...if he does, he is severely delusional). In order for America to accept a black president, it has to be someone like Barak Obama. You know, the kind of black man that makes some white folks say "oh my, he is so articulate".

Thankfully (in some ways, not so much in others), im not an American.
But if I were, I would vote for Barak, purley because the last time a family won the primary with 2 different members, within the space of 4 years, it didnt work out too well....

Maybe theres hope and boyscout Gore will put his hand foward for nomination, its a fucking damn shame he didnt get office.

Seeing a 90 year old man say "nappy headed hoes" was probably the funniest clip I've seen on the Daily Show in a long time.

No, but there are consequences to all actions.

Isn't it obvious that MSNBC would take that action if they are being circled by bad publicity and press. I'm sure I would do the same to try to repute the integrity of the network.

It's amazing though, i'm sure if he had just said hoes there would be absolutely no situation at the moment. Interesting I guess.

Its official sports fans, Imus has been completely axed from CBS now as well. I assume we will see him on Satellite radio in the not too distant future but wow, talk about knee jerk reaction. I say if the Rutgers basketball team (those who Imus's comments were directed at) forgive him, then it should be left at that. Incidentally, they did.
