I agree with the MEANING of what he's saying though. It's known that the Wii isn't a powerhouse, and everything in spore is dynamically created on the fly via algorithms. With the Wii being little more than a Gamecube power-wise, it can't do all that math on the fly. I'm not taking shots at the system, the system is amazingly fun, but I think down the road, things like extremely advanced AI and whatnot won't be important on the Wii because of the hotseat multiplayer aspect. Most, if not all Nintendo bosses don't use AI, they use scripted paths (look at enemies and bosses in the Zelda or Starfox games, or even Mario. You beat them by figuring out their path.), so I don't think they were even thinking about advanced AI routines that'll be found in a game like Spore.

which brings me to my opinion on the matter.

we all knew the wii was going to be this way. we knew it was going to be low-tech, but with the potential to make really fun games. whether it will realize this potential will have to wait, but we knew that's what nintendo was going to do. it's a great idea, given the position nintendo is in compared to sony and microsoft, and they've clearly been having great success with it thus far.

so to call the system a "piece of shit" over it, and to say that games won't be an "art" on the wii - that's just dumb.

I agree with you 100% on the subject. We're going to see different types of games on the Wii than the other consoles. We'll see more traditional games on the PS3 and 360, and I feel that a lot will really push the limits on our expectations of gaming if done right (GTA IV and Halo 3 have the potential to be the biggest games of all time), but the Wii already did revolutionize the way we play games, and really can only get better as we go along. The wii won't see the high tech, AI/Aural/Video breakthroughs we'll see in the other consoles, but we'll see breakthroughs in how we play games.

A day after bashing Nintendo at a GDC developer rant, Spore designer Chris Hecker offered a public apology.

Spore designer Chris Hecker probably didn't realize that a firestorm of controversy would erupt over his comments yesterday regarding the Nintendo Wii. During a developer rant session at the Game Developers Conference on Wednesday, Hecker said that the "Wii is a piece of s***," slamming the system for its lack of power and Nintendo for only making fun games and not artistic ones. A day later, and after much outcry on the Internet, Hecker offered up a lengthy apology just prior to a presentation that he gave on Spore's powerful animation system.

"I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun, and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process, I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologize now," Hecker said.

He added that when he said those words, he was speaking for himself, and that he did not represent the views of EA or Maxis. Hecker also apologized to his coworkers, who he said were upset over the remarks.

"I do not think that the Wii is a piece of s***," Hecker said, and he applauded Nintendo for its innovation regarding the Wii's unique controller, its user interface, and the system's affordable price. He also commended Nintendo for its passion at making great games.
Hecker's apology was met with polite applause from the sizable audience. He then launched into an in-depth explanation of the animation system in Spore, the ambitious and long-awaited next game from Will Wright, the creator of The Sims and SimCity. Hecker's session was titled, "How to Animate a Character You've Never Seen Before."

At the end of the day, if you have both a PC and a 360, then you have the choice of playing with either a mouse and keyboard or a controller on BOTH systems.

(keyboard+mouse will work for 360, controller will work for PC with a usb addon)

Well basically, it can only be used for the games that actually might require it (if that makes sense). So yes, I guess it has limited support from the games itself.

I think it's more thought of as a chat feature with limited controls with the mouse, and might be supported by the next couple of MMOs coming up. TBH, I'm not even sure if it requires some 'hacking' into the system or not, because I haven't looked at it really.

The new accessory for the 360 controller for MSN (with the QWERTY keyboard) might solve the chatting problem in upcoming MMOs and other games that might require text instead of voice.

Like I said... AFTER they started producing shitty kid games. I loved my N64 and a lot of the games for it. When GC hit the market I lost interest in Nintendo due to the fact their target audience changed.

And yes Smash Bros does suck. If I want to have a party with some friends I don't take my console or PC to their house, I take liquor and beer.
