Sony Pictures making Metal Gear movie

Executive confirms his movie studio is working on the live-action adaptation of the seminal stealth action series.
By Tor Thorsen (http://www.gamespot.com/users/thorsen-ink/), GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/) Posted Feb 8, 2007 10:21 am PT

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, Konami revealed that work had begun on a live-action movie based on Metal Gear Solid (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6150282.html). The news broke via a pamphlet for Studio Kojima, the Konami-owned development house headed up by Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima.

"I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," Kojima said in a statement. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."
For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.

"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. summit keynote address in Las Vegas (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6165552.html). "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"
Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.

Besides the forthcoming World of Warcraft film (http://www.gamespot.com/news/614963.html), currently in development at Warner Bros., the Metal Gear Solid movie is the highest-profile game-film project in Hollywood. Previously, that stature was held by the Peter Jackson-produced Halo adaptation, which imploded last year (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6160742.html).

World of Warcraft, a movie?

serios?

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of better games/concepts that could become movies. I haven't played an MMORPG with storyline/plot sufficient enough to be developed into a film.

Actually, the Warcraft universe has so much story behind it, I'm not surprised at a WoW movie at all. WoW has a fuck ton of story and lore, makes perfect sense.

TSW comes to mind.

Having a good storyline/abundance of lore is no guarantee for greatness. A lack of it is a sure recipe for failure though, unless some artful improvisation comes into play.

It's not so much a movie about WoW, as it is a movie about WarCraft's world, to rephrase it. Blizzard has meticulously developed the background behind it's games, and it shouldn't be a surprise that they chose WarCraft to do a movie about.

The only hitch?

It's going to be in real time, instead of CGI (which would have been the medium any of us predicted).

MGS movie would suck unless David Hayter played Snake, imo.

Kelly got it, way to read the article my friend.

The WoW movie isn't based on "WoW" at all, just based in the Warcraft world. Blizzard seems to have a lot of say, and a lot of power in what happens to the movie. Hell, they can say no to the screenwriter if they don't like the direction he is taking. The WoW movie might be one of the better game->movie adaptations ever.

As for MGS, I'm with Yuri. Get that guy who did the english voice of Snake to play him. Don't get some big name.

The exec will be, of course, Hideo Kojima himself while the producer will be Michael De Luca, who produced such movies as Zathura: A Space Adventure and the upcoming Ghost Rider movie.

Yeah, because MGS2 was the pinnacle of the MGS series.

Hideo isn't totally invincible, and bad casting could kill the movie. I reiterate, no Hayter, no good movie. I refuse to play an imported MGS game because it doesn't have David fucking Hayter as Snake's voice. I can't imagine anyone else playing Snake, he's just so 100% perfect for the role.

Yeah for sure, David Hayter better fucking play Snake....

He did sort of look like him no?

I can't remember or be bothered to look it up on IMDB, but it would be a problem is Hayter was pudgy or couldn't do some of the signature snake moves.

David hayter has the best voice ever for snake.

I played MGS1 the other day, and I have to say... the gamecube version of it, with the updated graphics, KILLS both mgs2 and 3 in every possible way. WTF WAS WITH THE LIQUID's HAND SHIT IN MGS2?

No.

MAYBE MGS2, just maybe, but definitely not MGS3.

You have a problem with Liquid taking over Ocelot's body through his arm, but Snake bullet-timing missiles and kicking them away is all right?

Twin Snakes blows MGS2 away, but MGS3 was amazing. I prefer the PS1 version of Twin Snakes still though, in Twin Snakes all the women's accents are generic California girl. Why the fuck is a Chinese girl, a British woman, and a Russian woman speaking like they're from Vallejo or something? That really turned me off, because MGS isn't just a game, it was an experience, and that really detracted from it for me.
