View Full Version : Need onions on new PC

Gonna be putting a new PC together, mostly for Photoshop so the emphasis is probably on raw processor power, access speeds and 8gig RAM minimum. Your budget is AU$2000, kgo!

CS5? I know premiere does GPU hardware accel, not sure if photoshop does.

Either way, I'd look at either a high end i5 or midrange i7 imo. IIRC, aussies get raped regarding prices for this stuff so it should fit well around a $2k budget.

8Gigs of ram? Are you 100% certain you'll be using that much? Not that it matters today anyway, you can get ram for pretty cheap...

How big are the files you work with? Furthermore, since you are a gamer what res monitor do you use?

LOL

Yeah I'm trying to figure out if PS gets any benefit from multiple cores, everyone seems a bit vague on it.

The huge RAM is more just to cover my bases if I start working on larger images. I'm talking 300DPI poster sized things. The more breathing space I had around those the better and besides, yeah, the price difference between 4gig and 8gig isn't all that much so why not.

Monitor I use at the moment has a max res of 1440x900...but I'm looking at purchasing a new monitor along with the computer, just not factoring that into the price of the box.

$2000 Australian is what? $200 Usa?

Damascus
October 9th, 2010, 06:27 PM
AU dollar is about .99 last I checked a few days ago, so it'd be 2000 about cents short of $2000 American.

Can I use newegg to price it out? I don't know any AUS sites... How are you getting this thing assembled?

Also, if you're going to start working with bigger files at 300DPI, I really recommend using 64bit, it makes a big diff. I'm sure you knew that though.

I looked up GPU accel, it's only for specific features in editing like that pan zoom out and whatnot, and you can use it with either nvidia or ati. What I was thinking of was the mercury playback engine but that's only for premiere and nvidia GPUs, I don't think you'll be doing video editing?

Also, multi cores do make a big diff...but I think you'll end up with a quad core with hyperthreading anyway. 8 Threads ftw.

Just ship it to my house, I'll assemble it and then of course send it on its way to you in a timely manner.

Yeah use Newegg if you want. I'll probably get a local PC place to put it together, he's been pretty reliable for years and is usually more than happy to order in parts.

And yeah, I've been running a 64-bit PC since just after Vista was released and never had any problems, so I wasn't planning on making a backward step in that respect :p

I hope at the very least he doesn't rip you off.... The city I reside in is well renowned for it.

I'll price it out, hopefully he won't charge you too much for putting it together. Unfortunately, Aus prices are a little bit higher so it'll be hard to get perfectly priced.

Also lol, happy canadian thanksgiving everyone!

Archaos

You can put that shit together yourself Craig...

Talorth
October 11th, 2010, 02:51 PM
It depends on how much this guy will be charging... IMO

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2940/24035881.jpg

What I came up with, in Aussie prices that hopefully wont be any higher than $1800 AUS. (Yes, australia gets screwed)

Obviously it needn't be identical to this but this is roughly what he should be charging you, give or take... and a few parts being different here and there, doesn't really matter in the long run.

Plus, if you want you can swap that video card for an ATI equivalent like a 5850. I just left that up there primarily because of mercury playback with premiere... I don't think you'll be doing any video editing but it certainly was a consideration when I put this together. Plus, it does make a HUGE difference with that program.

also rofl I just realized I included that price of that stupid game that was free in there... FAIL

Thanks, I'll compare all these THINGS when I find time to get a quote from the AUSTRALIAN GUY.

And we may get shafted on prices of just about everything, but in exchange we get the worlds largest rock!

Was thinking of waiting a few months anyway, so might pay to keep an eye on these things you're talking about and see how they pan out.

Also, so hey, how's that American dollar doing for ya'll? Should have bought up on Australian goods a few weeks ago and started selling them off for a profit now!
