So.. a new option at Dell is kicking into effect for my department.. that being XPS..
The new option is being able to work from home.. they give us 1000 dollars initially to purchase office equipment (desk, chair, basically what I already have). A notebook, docking station, 20" fp secondary display, and pay for the phone/internet every month ($100 budget)..
But the thing is, you lose face value, you aren't seen, no opportunity to move up when you're sittin at home.. that and no fun fucking with coworkers..
What would you do? I'm still undecided :/

I'd say don't do it. Whenever I worked from home it involved spending lots of time in bed and playing computer games. Unless you have incredible powers of self motivation then it's simply not worth taking the risk.

complete agreement
Also, you really miss the lack of interaction with people face to face

Its almost the perfect gamers dream job.. and a free laptop/screen.. and less bills to pay.. but I'm terrible at governing myself.. lol

When I took my current job, I had two job offers on the same day.
The other job started at about £4K ($8K) a year less, but totally working from home with the occasional busniess meeting in a bar to track progress on code. I would have been expected to work whatever hours were necessary, whether that meant writing code for a project through the night then having a couple of days off was up to me, providing I hit the deadlines that were set.
The job I took probably costs me that extra £4K in travelling and lunch expenses, but it is standard 8hrs a day, 5 days a week. I have interaction with other people which I would not have had with the other job and I'm able to plan my outside of work life very easily.
(I'm actually on £7.5K more than the other job started at now, but that's irrelevant)

Those are usually the first people that get canned while downsizing as well.
And yeah, you need to be HIGHLY self motivated and not get distracted easily.

I've done the tech support from home, and if my employer had been a little more flexible with hours and my schooling, I'd still be doing it. It allowed me to get homework done while working, or game while working. Seeing as how you're just answering calls, governing yourself isn't that much of an issue since the call comes in, you have to answer it.
ps, get me a job, I'll work from TO for less.

If you want to be first in line for a promotion I recommend staying at the office, and not go and work at home.

I work for MTV, and I have to say I like working from home. It has it's positives and it's negatives, you do need to have enough self motivation to move your ass out of your chair every now and then and not forget that there is a world outside your house. My first mistake was munching and going for little food and I gained weight but have since worked it off. I caught myself quick enough :P
Ask them if you can be "co-locational" meaning that you can come into the office if you wish but you can work from home too. Plus don't think working from home means you can't move up the chain of command... If you do good work it will be noticed either way. Just because you're at home doesn't mean you're totally unsupervised.
